1. JAXA documents database

1.1. varieties of JAXA document database

(1) JAXA repository

JAXA Repository is the system for public use of materials such as documents, data and theses JAXA has presented in public.
Through this system you can access their bibliography and certain amount of text*.
You can also access materials presented by NAL, ISAS and NASDA, which are the predecessors of JAXA
*Some of documents are closed. They might be in the future disclosed.



(2) AIREX

AIREX (Aerospace Information Reference External Version) is the system for public use of both domestic and international documentary records mainly regarding aerospace.
Among them, those provided by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration, USA) are opened only to those who belong to organizations that are on cooperative relationship between JAXA on document exchange.
Details of AIREX are shown in the Outline of AIREX.



1.2. scope of search and reading

(1) those belonging to cooperative organization

Those who belong to cooperative organization with JAXA regarding document exchange are allowed to search for generally all the bibliographic information.
Documents provided by cooperative organizations in Japan are disclosed in the PDF, according to the permission by respective organization for electronic disclosure.
Documents not electronically disclosed can be provided upon request.

(2) guest users

Guest users also are allowed to search generally all the bibliographic information but text of some documents are not available to guest users.

1.3. User certification for AIREX

Those who belong to cooperative organization with JAXA regarding document exchange are encouraged to get user certification, which enables them to utilize more documents.
There are 2 ways of user certification as following;

(1) IP address

If your organization takes IP address certification, you don't have to log in.

(2) ID and password

First of all, please get your ID and password from person to contact in your organization.
When you access AIREX, you will see the “LOG IN” button at the upper right of screen.
Push this button and you will find the “log-in screen”, and there put your ID and password.
Only the person to contact is authorized to change password.
Password change must be made at least every 3 months.

2. How to request documents

Push the document request button in the detail information, then you will find the document request screen.
*Document request button does not appear if text of the document is already available through AIREX.

Document request screen is different according to whether user is the one who belongs to a cooperative organization, or guest user.
Please check whether your organization is a cooperative organization with JAXA regarding document exchange.
If you cannot make sure of it, please inquire to JAXA contact point.

(1) those belonging to cooperative organization

Please ask the liaison in your organization to request JAXA to send to the liaison the document you want.
Requested document is sent to the liaison in your organization.
No charge is claimed for duplication and shipment.



(2) guest user

Please request JAXA to send the document you want, through filling in all necessary information in the document request screen.
You have to bear the cost for duplication (\35 per piece of sheet) and for shipment.
First of all we will send the bill for payment to the address you fill in the document request screen.
Then please make the payment into the bank account shown in the bill.
After we make sure of your payment completion, we send the document.
We also accept NACSIS ILL cost as an offset against your payment to JAXA. If your organization turns out to be a cooperative organization after you request the document to JAXA as a guest user, we will contact you, and in such case the address to which we send the requested document will be the liaison in your organization.

3. How to operate JAXA repository and AIREX

Common search system is used for JAXA repository and AIREX.
So following explanations for system operation are applicable, with the partial exception, both to JAXA repository and to AIREX.

3.2. User certification (AIREX only)

Those who belong to cooperative organization with JAXA regarding document exchange are encouraged to get user certification, which enables them to utilize more documents.
How to be certified is referred in User certification for AIREX as found above.

3.3. function for searching

(1) keyword for searching

1) condition for hit in searching

  • Multi-bite letter (Japanese) applies contained search.
  • Alphabet and number applies, by word, prefix search.
  • Ex: 「int」→○「international」「into」 ×「dint」

    2) more specific search

  • space between keywords, then you can hit the target which contains all the keywords.
  • between keywords, then you can hit the target which contains at least one of the keywords.
  • (!) at the top of keyword, then you can hit the target which does not contain the keyword.
  • 3) phrase search

  • If you want to search a specific phrase, you respectively put double quotation (“) respectively at the beginning and the end of the phrase.
  • If the phrase contains pipes (|) or exclamations (!), these are regarded not as above spacific search but as the ordinal cord.
    Ex: "Aerospace Information Reference system"
    "Reference | system"
  • Odd number(s) of quotations (“) contained leads to error.
  • Ex: " Aerospace Information" "Reference system

    4) distinction of letter

  • This search function cannot distinguish capital letter and small letter of alphabet.
  • This search function cannot distinguish full-size character and half-size character of alphabet.
  • This search function cannot distinguish capital letter and small letter of Cyrillic.
  • This search function cannot distinguish full-size character and half-size character of katakana.
  • This search function cannot distinguish full-size character and half-size character of number (0~9).
  • This search function excludes the following character.
    a hyphen, a macron, #$%&’()*+,-./:;<=>?@[]\^_{!}~|

  • (2) easy search

    By easy search on top, you can search the whole document information with keyword you set.
    Details in search keyword are “
    keyword for searching” found above.

    (3) detail search

    Detail search enables you to set strict search condition.
    Details in search keyword are “keyword for searching” found above.




    1 You can set search field.
    “free keyword” search the whole document information, in the same way as easy search
    “title” search by the title of document
    “author” search by author of document
    “publishing organization”  search by organization which publishes the document
    “date of publish” search by date of publish of the document
    “ISBN/ISSN” search by ISBN or ISSN
    “report number” search by report number of the document
    “document number” search by document number in JAXA repository or AIREX

    2 AND,OR,NOT
    Specify the logical operator applying to the lines of search conditions.

    3 condition of display
    You can sort the list of search result to be shown on condition you set.

  • “no sort” no sort
  • “document number” “title” “publishing organization” “date of publish” set each point
  • “ascending order” “descending order” sort the set points in each order
  • 4 set the number of results displayed at once
    select the number of search results displayed in the list at once,“show results by 20”or“show results by 50”or“show results by 100”.

    (4) category search (JAXA repository only)

    You can search JAXA repository for a certain category as the target of search




    (5) narrowing down the search target (AIREX only)

    In AIREX, you can narrow down the search target of such as NASA or domestic document.

  • ”NASA STI + AIRS”: You can search for all document
  • ”NASA document”: You can search for NASA document only.
  • ”Document in Japan”: You can search for document in Japan onlu.

    (1) narrow down a search result

    You can make your search even more specific.
    Such narrow down search appears with the previous search result already reflected. (such as “subject of search”, “search keyword”, “number of search result shown at once”, “order of search result shown”.)

    (2) how to check search result

    1 Herein is shown the “subject of search” which you specify for searching.

    2 Herein is shown the “search keyword” which you specify for searching.

    3 Herein is shown the information of search result, as following;.
    Number of applied items are that of hit items. Herein is currently shown the hit result in order number of “record number of display start” deducted by “record number of display end”.

    4 This pulldown is for changing the order of display in the list. If you change the pulldown, view format is promptly changed according to applied conditions.

  • specify the order of display
  • You can change displayed order, either ascending or descending, of search result, by selecting from “no specify”, “document number”, “title”, “publishing organization” or “date of publish”.

    5 This is the link to go to other pages. If you click this, the page is switched.

    6 This is for showing document information, presented in the forrowing forms;



    3.4. Screen of detailed information




    1 This shows the title, author, journal in which contained, publishing organization and abstract.

    2 This is the link to text.
    *The link to text is presented if the text data is available.

    3 GoogleScholar icon
    *If you click GoogleScholar icon, it seaches GoogleScholar by the title of the document.

    4 It presents Permalink.
    *Permalink is the fixed link for presenting detailed information screen.
    *You can also find the detailed information from URL for Permalink. By registering Permalink in your favorities, you can directly watch detailed information.

    5 document request button
    *If you click document request button, the screen of document request is presented.
    *If the text is available, the button of document request is not presented.
